Rabbits – cute little things

rabbit

Rabbits are puffy mamals. They belong to the Lagomorph order and are relatives to hares and pikas. Here is an interesting fact: Lagomorph means ‘hare-shaped’. Rabbits have incisor teeth, which grow continually.

The whole Family Leporidae is formed by rabbits – over 50 species. All of them are herbivores (plant eating) and most active at dawn and dusk.During the days they often nap. Rabbits have a high reproduction rate, long ears, powerful hind legs with long feet and a short, furry, upturned tail.

There are many types of rabbits that we know currently. Hares and wild rabbits are two considered as this kind of rabbits. The two major categories of those wonderful, cute, puffy animals are free rabbits and domestic rabbits.

Free are the ones  who live in wild nature, not around humans: Hares and wild rabbits. The differences between hares and wild rabbits are, that hares live in simple nest on the ground made from grasses, and their babies are born with opened eyes and fully furred already. On the other hand wild rabbits dig burrow (or warren) under the ground, and their babies are born blind and furless

Domestic rabbits are those who live around humans. Nowerdays we can find domestic rabbits everywhere the world. However, they were originally domesticated from one species only of European rabbits (Oryctolagus Cuniculus) that live across Europe and northern Africa.

The term domestic in rabbit sometimes actually means a house rabbit. This one lives in a house together with the owner as an indoor pet just like dog or cat. It is a fact, that rabbit is the third most popular pet after dog and cat.
